An earthquake was felt in various places in Bangladesh, including the capital Dhaka. The earthquake was felt at 5:11 pm today, Sunday (September 14). Meteorological Department sources said that the epicenter of the earthquake was in the Indian state of Assam, 380 kilometers from Dhaka.

Md. Rubaiyat Kabir, officer-in-charge of the Earthquake Observation and Research Center of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, told Prothom Alo today, “We have records that an earthquake of magnitude 5.8 initially occurred.”

Although the Meteorological Department said the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.8, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.9, The source is 14 kilometers east of Udalguri in the Indian state of Assam. It originates at a depth of 10 kilometers below the surface.

Seismologist Professor Humayun Akhtar said today that the magnitude of the earthquake at the epicenter was 5.9 on the Richter scale. The epicenter is located between the Assam Valley and the Himalayas, far from Assam’s capital Guwahati. It is a moderate to severe earthquake.
